Trek for Hope reaches new heights
On the 11th of February, after overcoming COVID related delays, a band of 12 adventurous souls, set out on a once-in-a-lifetime trek through the spectacular surrounds of Tasmania’s iconic Cradle Mountain. Although they began the adventure as strangers, they ended the trip as wonderful friends who had shared an incredible experience that brought each of them a profound sense of accomplishment and solidarity and in doing so, managed to raise nearly $80,000 for Pancare Foundation.
These funds will enable Pancare to continue to fund world-leading research, seeking to accelerate early detection, develop new treatments and enhance patient care and clinical trials, leading both to key research breakthroughs and much-needed government and community awareness of the state of upper gastrointestinal cancers.
Over five days, this team of like-minded adventurers were amazed by the variety of landscapes they experienced. From the jagged peak of Cradle Mountain to the surrounding glacial lakes and temperate rainforests, the Tasmanian wilderness was nothing short of breathtaking. There were plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting, with wombats and other native wildlife roaming freely across the landscape.
According to the Unite for Hope trekkers, the best part of their trip wasn’t even the scenery. It was the connections and friendships that were formed over the five days. The group was made up of trekkers from all over the country with each having a different connection to the cause. Some had lost a loved one and wanted to make a difference in their memory, others because they appreciate the struggles that upper gastrointestinal cancers face in comparison to other major cancers. The group was lucky enough to share the Trek with the inspiring Tino, who is a pancreatic cancer survivor, recently celebrating two years cancer free. Pancare Foundation CEO, Doug Hawkins was there to provide the trekkers with a deeper insight into the Foundation and the important work we do across research and patient services, and to ensure that all trekkers understood how much their support is valued.
Once again, incredible supporters of Pancare, Floorworld stepped up in support of the Trek as Major Trek Partners. Floorworld CEO, Bob Crotty, was a much-loved member of the Trek and his commitment and passion for the cause is invaluable.
As one Trekker so beautifully expressed:
“I came on this trip to help raise funds for Pancare in memory of a loved one and I left with a sense of catharsis, sharing my own experience with others who had been through a similar experience or had deep empathy for the cause, was perhaps the most life-changing part of the Trek. The bonus was the incredible scenery and the Trek itself, but it was the people who made it once-in-a-lifetime”
The Trek for Hope Cradle Mountain 2022 had reached its target of $75,000, but that wasn’t enough for our passionate trekkers, increasing their goal to an ambitious $80,000 and with less than a grand to raise, if you would like to help them hit this pinnacle, please donate here.
This Trek would not have been possible without the valued support of our Sponsors. With heartfelt thanks to:
