Take time out to rest and recharge
Respite care supports you and your carer by providing the opportunity to have a break. It may be provided at home, in the community (such as a hospital or palliative care unit/ hospice) or in residential care facility (such as an aged care facility).
This form of care is short-term in nature, from a few hours to overnight or a couple of days.
Carer respite
As a carer, it’s important to regularly take time out for yourself to rest and recharge. This could be for any reason, including:
- visiting friends or other family members
- running errands, such as grocery shopping or attending appointments
- catching up on some sleep at home
- enjoying some relaxation time
- attending events and social functions.
Often, carers don’t access respite care because they feel guilty or anxious about leaving the person they are caring for. Caring is a difficult task that can be challenging. Respite services exist because it is important for carers to maintain their own wellbeing when taking on this important role. By taking a break, you will probably find that you can be more effective in your caring role. Respite care can also give the person you are caring for an opportunity to interact with other people.
Respite care is offered through public and private organisations and agencies. Please contact Pancare’s PanSupport team at [email protected] for a list of available respite care in your area.
